Sea Level Rise: The Plum Island Story

November 29, 2017 @ 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

During the winter of 2012-2013 close to a third of the houses on Plum Island’s southern primary dune were lost or damaged and the island sustained the most concentrated area of damage in all of New England. Responses to the destruction set a precedent in the ongoing debate about homeowners’ rights and environmental policy in the new era of sea level rise and more powerful storms.

Bill Sargent is a consultant for the NOVA science series on PBS and the author of 20 books about science and the environment. His most recent books have dealt with the effects of sea level rise in places like New Orleans, Florida and on Cape Cod.  He will present stunning drone footage of the human tragedy on Plum Island.

Several of his books are available at the Plum Island Outdoors, Inc. Online Store including:

  • “Islands in the Storm
  • “Plum Island 4000 Years on a Barrier Beach
  • “Plum Island 2016
  • “Crab Wars: A Tale of Horseshoe Crabs, Bioterrorism, and Human Health
  • “Plum Island 2017: Resurrection
    • Crab Wars: A Tale of Horseshoe Crabs, Bioterrorism, and Human Health
