The Next Big Storm: Preparing Newburyport for Extreme Weather
December 7, 2017 @ 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
The recent hurricane season, with Harvey, Irma, José, and María, reminded us just how vulnerable communities can be, whether they receive a direct hit or get pummeled with rain and wind generated by a tropical storm.
Storm Surge’s next presentation, hosted by Mayor Donna Holaday, features a panel of Newburyport department heads and the Emergency Management Director, who will discuss where the City is vulnerable, how it is working to increase resiliency, and what actions will be taken in the during extreme weather events to protect the community.
The purpose of this event is to facilitate an ongoing conversation between The City of Newburyport and concerned citizens regarding storm emergency planning and its response to possible storm damage.
Following an introduction by the Mayor about the advance planning that takes place for storm events, Molly Ettenborough and Julia Godtfredsen will set the context of ongoing efforts to build upon Newburyport’s Resiliency Plan. This planning effort takes place in coordination with other communities neighboring upon the Great Marsh. DPS Director Anthony Furnari and City Engineer Jon-Eric White will review existing conditions and vulnerabilities of our public infrastructure, i.e. our water supply, the sewage treatment plant and the electric grid.
Fire Chief and Emergency Management Director, Chief Christopher LeClaire, will then discuss storm damage mitigation and life safety concerns.
These presentations will be followed by an opportunity for the audience to ask questions of the panel.
