Walking Tours of Plum Island

June 10, 2018 @ 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

$12

The walking tours of Plum Island, North Point, led by science writer Bill Sargent,   and nature photographer Sandy Tilton will run every other Sunday at 10 AM starting AUGUST. The 90-minute walking tours, will run from Newburyport Park to the south jetty and back, rain or shine.

Tour participants will gather at the Restrooms (Closed) in the Parking lot at 10 AM for the walk.

Discover horseshoe crabs, wooly mammoth, terns, and striped bass. View the effects of last winter’s erosion. Changes did occur over this past Winter and this Spring. Especially with last March’s several Nor’easters.  Mother Nature is in charge and Climate Caos!

Investigate the Coast Guard archeology site and speculate on whether some of the artifacts could have been used to set U-boat nets across the Merrimack River. Visit the Sand Machine where up to an acre of sand flow through natural weirs in the South Jetty during high course tides. Discuss how the Army Corps of Engineers, the city of Newburyport, universities, and colleges have all been working together to work with nature and find a solution to the rapid erosion on the point.

Tour participation is a suggested $12, payable to Plum Island Outdoors, an IRS Certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Bring a camera, sensible shoes and a keen sense of humor with you.

Bill Sargent is the author of over 20 books about science and the environment, including “Islands in the Storm”, “Plum Island 4000 Years on a Barrier Beach”, “Plum Island 2016, and “Crab Wars: A Tale of Horseshoe Crabs, Bioterrorism, and Human Health”.  Bill’s latest is “Plum Island to Palm Beach, Our Shrinking Shoreline“, a book about his travels from Plum Island in Northern Massachusetts to the winter White House on Palm Beach Florida, to explore our sinking shore.
