Plum Island is rich in history and is part of four municipalities in Massachusetts. The municipalities, from the Northern end, Plum Island Point, to the South end, Sandy Point, are:
- Newburyport
- Newbury
- Rowley
- Ipswich
Plum Island is a barrier island on the Gulf of Maine’s Western shore. The Merrimack River’s mouth is at the island’s North end between Salisbury and Newburyport. The island’s South end, Sandy Point, is part of Ipswich at the mouth of Plum Island Sound, North of Crane Beach, Ipswich.
